Refi, Dwita, and Range, members of the Ethnobiological Society of Indonesia (Perhimpunan Masyarakat Etnobiologi Indonesia / PMEI), have been awarded an incentive by the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) under its 2025 Local Knowledge Acquisition program. The incentive recognizes their significant work documented in a film focusing on the conservation of the extinct in the wild Mangifera casturi (Kalimantan mango), a mango species endemic to South Kalimantan.
The documentary chronicles the determined journey of the three young researchers as they seek to conserve Mangifera casturi, a species declared extinct in the wild by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Their mission began by tracing the last traces of the species, from scouring traditional markets to conducting expeditions in botanical gardens and conservation forests.
The film provides a comprehensive narrative, delving into the complex causes behind the Kasturi's extinction in its natural habitat. It further highlights the multifaceted preservation efforts and scientific research being undertaken to secure its future. This includes in-depth studies on the tree's optimal habitat, soil requirements, and propagation techniques—vital knowledge intended to support effective conservation strategies for the species.
Through interviews with experts and local stakeholders, the documentary underscores the critical importance of protecting biodiversity, particularly unique endemic species like the Kalimantan mango, in the ecologically rich area of South Kalimantan, often called "The Land of a Thousand Rivers."
The complete film, showcasing this vital conservation effort, is available on the official BRIN YouTube channel:
