PRESS RELEASE : Conservation Efforts: Project to conserve Mangifera casturi in South Kalimantan

 


South Kalimantan, December, 2023 – In a bold step towards environmental stewardship, a groundbreaking project has been launched to conserve the endemic and threatened Mangifera casturi in South Kalimantan, Indonesia. Led by The Ethnobiological Society of Indonesia and funded by Botanical Garden Conservation International (BGCI), this initiative aims to safeguard the biodiversity of the region while fostering sustainable development.

Mangifera casturi conservation initiative is a collaborative effort comprising a diverse of researchers, insititution, and community. This conservation is important due to Mangifera caturi faces unprecedented threats from deforestation, habitat loss, and climate change. Recognizing the urgent need to protect this vital component of the ecosystem, the project focuses on comprehensive conservation strategies, including study the current distribution, propagation protocol development both in-vitro and ex-vitro, as well as public awareness and community engagement.

Commenting on the project, Prof. Dr. Wawan Sujarwo, a researcher in National Research and Innovation Agency, stated: “The conservation of Mangifera casturi is not only essential for preserving biodiversity but also for securing the livelihoods of local communities who depend on these ecosystems. Through collaborative efforts, we can achieve meaningful and lasting conservation outcomes.”
